Growing up with Polish parents, and a Mom who always...and I mean always... made sure we ate well, I consumed so many pierogies, zurek, kompot (the list goes on). It wasn't until I left home for my undergrad at Purdue when I truly appreciated a home cooked meal. This summer will be the first summer where I spend almost all three months not at home. Although I hate to admit it, my Mom was always right when she would say I would learn to love some of her Polish recipes. One of them being Kompot. When I started this blog, under a month ago, I knew I wanted to incorporate more than just fashion posts. Food is a big part of my life. Not just because I love to eat (lol) but I also am very health-conscious. Putting proper nutrition into your body will make everything come full circle...trust me! Another perk of this recipe is that it helps to reduce food waste! One of my goals for 2017 was to try and live a more sustainable lifestyle. That means reducing waste, using sustainable & clean products, and trying to live that lifestyle to the best of my ability. That being said, Kompot is a fruit drink almost like a juice. Here are some neat things about Kompot:
- You can use as little or as much sugar as you want.
- The recipe is SO simple. You don't need to watch it while it summers. Let it sit and go catch up some some SharkTank or Bachelorette.
- You don't need to worry about gross chemicals or added concentrates in your summer drink, because you made it!
- People of all ages will enjoy this drink. It's great for kids in the summer, it can even be warmed in the winter and makes a great mixer for a cocktail (hint hint).

Fruit that is a tad over-ripe is the best. Not only does this make a sweet and smooth Kompot, it also helps to reduce food waste! You can use any fruit (but I would try not to use fruits like bananas because they are creamy). Some food fruit combos include:
- Strawberry and Rhubarb.
- Peaches and Berries with a tad of Orange.
- Apple and Cinnamon (served warm, like a cider).
Time to Prep: 10 minutes.
Time to Cook: 15-30 minutes.
Total Cooking Time: 25-40 minutes.
- A fruit of your choice.
- I used 12-15 strawberries, 5 peaches, 3 nectarines, and 1/1.5 oranges.
- TIP: cut your fruit up so you can put the pulp into your beverage and eat it with your drink!
- 1 gallon of water.
- this can also be up to your discretion. The amount of water depends upon how concentrated you want the flavor! I cooked mine in a big pot and filled it up around half way.
- 1/2 cup of sugar.
- Bring a gallon of water to a rapid boil
- While you wait for you water to boil, cut up you fruit into chunks. Peal any skin that you do not want to consume.
- Add the fruit into the boiling water along with the 1/2 cup of sugar. Stir and bring the pot down to a simmer.
- Cover the pot and let simmer for 15-30 minutes.
- The pot can simmer for up to an hour.
- Let cool before serving, unless you're serving it warm!
